Last month, we welcomed two new doctors to the Hoopes Vision family: Yasmyne Castillo-Ronquillo, MD, JD, and Orry Birdsong, MD. We are privileged to have each of them with us and know you will enjoy getting to know them as well.
Compliance Officer & Research Assistant for Hoopes, Durrie, Rivera Research
Dr. Yasmyne Castillo-Ronquillo is an experienced general ophthalmologist, and was Chief of Ocular Pathology at the Philippine Eye Research Institute of the University of the Philippines Manila. She received her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of the Philippines Manila and was the Chief Resident in Ophthalmology at the UP-Philippine General Hospital. She finished her fellowship in Ocular Pathology with Dr. Robert Folberg at the University of Iowa and has published scientific articles on Retinoblastoma, Ocular Tumors and the Genetics of Eye Diseases. She has a Master’s Degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Toledo. She recently completed her Doctor of Law (JD) degree from the University of Toledo, specializing in health law, and was the Head of Clinical Operations/Compliance Officer for Reed Vision and Promedica Eye Care in Toledo, Ohio.
Other notable positions include: Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UP College of Medicine, Consultant for the Department of Ophthalmology, UP-Philippine General Hospital, and Member of the UP-Manila Ethics and Institutional Review Board.
She has mentored medical students, graduate students, residents, ophthalmologists, fellows in ocular pathology, general pathologists and ophthalmic technicians.
She is currently serving as the Compliance Officer for Hoopes Vision and participates as a Research Assistant for Hoopes, Durrie, Rivera Research.
Dr. Ronquillo is the mother of two and grandmother of two. She also is a trained concert pianist and enjoys all types of music.
Orry Birdsong, MD Ophthalmologist
Dr. Orry Birdsong is an ophthalmologist that completed his medical school and residency training at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He is receiving his cornea and refractive fellowship training here at Hoopes Vision under the mentorship of Majid Moshirfar, MD. His surgical specialties include laser-assisted cataract and clear lens exchange procedures, laser refractive surgery, and the newest cutting-edge cornea transplant techniques.
A native of Amarillo, TX, Dr. Birdsong received his undergraduate degrees in Biochemistry and Health Sciences at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. During his medical school and residency, Dr. Birdsong worked through multiple hospitals in Galveston including the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Hospital Galveston as well as the prestigious Houston Methodist Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Birdsong has an ongoing interest in providing patients the newest, most effective technologies and is currently providing patients with the KAMRA corneal inlay, implantable collamer lenses (ICL), and ReLEx SMILE refractive surgery.
