DR. PHIL HOOPES, JR.: The first step is where a device is used to create a surgical flap on the cornea. Traditionally, for many years, the flap was made with a surgical knife. Nowadays, we feel that there’s a safer method, which is more precise, in which we use a surgical laser to make the incision. This incision is carried just about a tenth of a millimeter along the undersurface of the cornea. Step 2 of LASIK is where we lift the flap that was created. Underneath the flap, we’re able, then, to apply the laser energy that will correct your vision. The amount of laser is determined by the prescription that you have. Once the laser has been used, we then put the flap back into place, and that finishes the surgery.
