DR. PHIL HOOPES, JR.: To be a good candidate for LASIK, several things have to be met. Probably, most importantly, is what prescription that you have. If a prescription is out of FDA approved guidelines, obviously, you’re not going to be a good candidate. Second, we’ll perform many tests on your eye, during your work-up. Those tests are designed to find out, is your eye thick enough to tolerate the surgery. Is the curvature on your eye symmetric enough to tolerate the surgery? Those are probably the most important things, in determining who’s a good candidate. If you’re somebody who has a prescription that seems to change every six to 12 months, that means your eye is not done changing. And we’d like to have you wait, until you have a stable prescription for a year, or more. If you’re that kind of person who’s had the same pair of glasses for the last five years, and doesn’t seem to change one bit, then you’re likely a great candidate for LASIK.
