DR. PHIL HOOPES, JR.: A cataract is when the internal eye lens clouds. Most commonly, people get cataracts as they get older. Sometimes, if you’ve had an eye injury, you can get a cataract at an earlier age than you otherwise would have. Certain types of medications can cause cataracts, like long-term steroid use, in somebody who may have had asthma as a child, and used a lot of steroids. When the internal lens of the eye is clouded, the best way to care for it is to remove the cataract, instead of operating on the outside of the eye, in a surgery such as LASIK.
