April 16th was Hoopes Vision Night at the Energy Solutions Arena during the Utah Jazz/Dallas Mavericks game. It was an exciting game for Jazz fans, with the Utah jazz winning by two points in triple overtime! Each year, Hoopes Vision Night is an opportunity for us to give a free LASIK surgery to one lucky Jazz fan. This time, three people competed in an on-court free-throw challenge. Ryan Moore was our lucky winner walking away with a certificate for complimentary blade-free custom LASIK surgery from Hoopes Vision. We at Hoopes Vision are proud to be trusted as the official eye care and LASIK provider for the Utah Jazz, and look forward to helping the staff, team, dancers and mascot and Jazz fans with their vision correction needs for years to come.

Former University of Utah defensive end, Derrick Shelby, recently selected Hoopes Vision for his LASIK surgery procedure. Derrick came to us last month for his initial evaluation to determine whether or not he would be eligible for one of our vision correction surgeries. He was tired of having his contact lenses pop out during contact on the football field, and was anxious to free himself of the problems that poor vision can cause an athlete during play. Derrick was found to be an excellent candidate for a custom IntraLASIK procedure. He returned to our office the day after his surgery seeing 20/20. We would like to thank Derrick for trusting us with this important decision and wish him the best in his potential NFL future.

Dr. Michael Bradley, MD, one of our LASIK and cataract surgeons here at Hoopes Vision, made a TV appearance March 28th on Good Morning Utah. He discussed cataracts, how they affect vision, and when one should consider cataract surgery.

Hoopes Vision’s surgeons are among the most experienced in Utah, and always use the latest cataract surgery technology, such as multifocal lens implants that are capable of providing better vision near and far, and the new LenSx cataract laser which replaces the handheld tools used in the first steps of cataract surgery with a more precise, accurate computer guided laser. If you suspect cataracts are affecting your vision, call our office at (801) 568-0200 to schedule an examination.

Recently, the Salt Lake Tribune published an article asking the rhetorical question of whether or not an annual doctor’s physical is worth the effort. Not to spoil the surprise for you, but the article found that, yes, a yearly checkup is well worth it, as it can lead to early detection of a wide variety of health problems.

The same holds true of annual eye exams: no matter what your age, no matter whether you’ve had LASIK, use glasses or contact lenses, or have naturally perfect vision, a yearly eye exam is definitely a great idea! There are several reasons this is true. For one, many people’s refractive error (i.e. the prescription in their glasses or contacts) can change gradually. For those people whose prescription is fluctuating, to compound those small changes by going several years between eye exams can result in headaches, eye strain and fatigue, and poor overall vision.

Another great reason to get an eye exam each year is that many chronic eye conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, can develop slowly – and visual symptoms are not an early warning sign. For example, glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world, yet doctors call it “the sneak thief of sight” because by the time it manifests itself in the form of vision loss, the damage is irreversible. Meanwhile, a simple dilated eye exam and intraocular pressure check each year – both of which are parts of the standard eye exam – can detect glaucoma so that it can be managed before it robs the patient of their sight.

At Hoopes Vision, we specialize in the surgical correction of vision and generally do not perform routine eye exams. We do, however, believe in the value of regular yearly eye exams. That’s why one of the conditions of our free lifetime See Clearly Guarantee – the first of its kind in Utah – is that the patient must continue having annual exams after surgery. We believe the best way to care for your eyes is to establish a relationship with a qualified and experienced optometrist, one who examines your eyes each year and can help maintain your ocular health and good vision. The doctors at Hoopes Vision work closely with hundreds of experienced optometrists and ophthalmologists in Utah and throughout the US. If you already have a good eye doctor, great! If you are looking for one, please feel free to contact us or visit our website, where we have a list of affiliated eye doctors in Utah and surrounding areas.

Vision is an amazing thing. Our sight defines our relationship with the world in a way that is truly unique, and yet it can be a fragile thing. Preventative care, in the form of an annual eye exam with a qualified optometrist, is an easy and inexpensive measure that is worth the effort!

The annual Hoopes Vision Holiday Optometric Seminar was held Wednesday, Dec. 7th at the Hilton Garden Inn in Sandy. Approximately 80 local Utah optometrists were in attendance as Hoopes Vision surgeons, Dr. Robert P. Rivera and Dr. Michael J. Bradley, discussed some of the newest advancements in ophthalmology including custom cataract surgery with the new LenSx cataract laser and corneal cross-linking for keratoconus. Throughout the year, Hoopes Vision offers several opportunities for Utah optometrists to educate themselves on the most current developments in the field of vision correction. We are honored to have many patients referred to us from these doctors and we enjoy working with them. This year we decided to mix things up by inviting the doctors to come dressed in their most atrocious holiday sweater. After delighting the group with their tacky tops, one lucky winner was selected.

We are happy about the recent groundbreaking of our new clinic and surgical facility in Draper! In an effort to serve our patients more efficiently and to accommodate future growth, we will be moving our main office in Sandy to a new 59,000 square-foot building. The three-story structure will be located between State Street and I-15 at 11820 South. Completion of the project is expected for Fall of 2012. Hoopes Vision staff and doctors were joined by representatives of the community and some of the key people involved in creating the future home of Hoopes Vision. Mayor Darrell Smith said a few words about the importance of “vision,” and the Jazz Bear mascot was on hand creating laughs. We are excited about this new adventure and look forward to watching the new building come to life!

Patients wishing to utilize full flex spending benefits for larger medical procedures such as vision correction surgery should consider putting flex spending aside now for next year.

Dr. Rivera also discussed the new LenSx laser that is available at Hoopes Vision. This laser automates many of the first crucial steps in cataract surgery, replacing the handheld surgical blades traditionally used with a computer-guided laser.

A good friend and patient of Hoopes Vision, Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, was also in studio to discuss the GOP debate. General Shurtleff had LASIK surgery performed by Dr. Hoopes Sr. in 2002.

Dr. Robert Rivera, MD, surgeon and Director of Clinical Research at Hoopes Vision, recently received the prestigious “Readers’ Choice Award” from Lovin’ Life after 50, a retirement lifestyle magazine published in his previous home state of Arizona. Along with the honor came a commemorative statue as well as a plaque, which now resides in the patient waiting area of his new clinic – Hoopes Vision.
Dr. Rivera has been honored numerous times over the course of his career, by various medical and professional associations, for his contributions to research in ophthalmology. Among all those prestigious awards, however, this one has its own special place, as it was the result of direct votes from patients. This Readers’ Choice Award is testament to the high regard in which Dr. Rivera is held by the people of Phoenix, something that’s sure to be repeated here in greater Salt Lake City. Congratulations to Dr. Rivera from all of us here at Hoopes Vision!

For years, people in Utah have trusted Bill Gephardt’s word. As host of the popular and long-running local KSL TV News segment “Get Gephardt,” he investigated dishonest businesses and service providers, holding them accountable for their actions. Since retiring from active television duty in 2010, he has launched the next phase in his consumer advocacy career: Gephardt Approved. Now, rather than rooting out unscrupulous businesses, he seeks out the best of the best, investigating their business practices and professional reputations thoroughly before declaring them “Gephardt Approved” and backing their services with his own guarantee.
We are proud to announce that Hoopes Vision is the first and only eye surgery center in Utah to be Gephardt Approved, for our achievements in LASIK, cataract surgery, implantable lenses (ICL), and other vision correction procedures. The honor wasn’t bestowed lightly: Bill spent considerable time researching clinical and surgical success rates, interviewing doctors, and visiting our clinic and surgery center on multiple occasions to witness first-hand the level of patient care Hoopes Vision delivers. Only after his thorough investigative process did he declare Hoopes Vision to be Gephardt Approved, profiling our clinic on his website (GephardtApproved.com) and backing us with his well-known guarantee.
Trust is everything when choosing any kind of service provider, but rarely is it as vitally important as in the realm of eye surgery, where you may truly have only one chance to “get it right.” We know that Utah trusts Bill Gephardt, and we’re honored that Bill trusts Hoopes Vision.
