Hoopes Vision recently was honored to take care of a true gentleman, Lord Graham C. Russell. The British guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist, and part of the duo Air Supply recently had cataract surgery at Hoopes Vision. Mr. Russell has been very gracious to members of our staff and we have enjoyed getting to know him. Some of his best known career hits are:
Lost in love, Every woman in the world, The one that you love, Even the nights are better, Two less lonely people in the world, Making love out of nothing at all, All out of love, and Here I am.
With the new single piece Tecnis® Multifocal lens he now enjoys 20/20 vision both distance and near. Air Supply still maintains a busy performance schedule and released their latest album, Mumbo Jumbo, in May of 2010. The new single, Dance with Me, is already climbing the adult contemporary charts.
Air Supply’s Lord Graham Russell joined Dr. Hoopes this morning on the set of Good Things Utah on abc 4. They discussed what the operation was like and how his vision is now. Air Supply will be performing a concert July 2nd at 8:00 in Tooele. Tickets can be purchased at the Macey’s food and drug in Tooele.

Apa, nicknamed “Super Sherpa”, is a Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer who holds the record for reaching the summit of Mount Everest more times than any other person. On May 22 2010, Apa broke his own record as he reached the summit for the 20th time as part of the Eco Everest Expedition 2010. Apa and his family currently reside in Draper, Utah. He is dedicated to improving education and living conditions for the people of Nepal. We are happy for his success, and look forward to seeing him again soon.
We were honored by the fact that Apa took a Hoopes Vision banner with him to the summit for a picture. Here are some additional pictures taken on the record breaking ascent. You can read a detailed account of the trip on his blog at http://www.apasherpa.com/

We were one of a handful of worldwide clinics recently chosen to participate in the US Clinical Trials for the Acufocus® Corneal Inlay (ACI). Designed to improve functional near vision and reduce dependency on reading glasses, the ACI may offer a promising solution to presbyopia. The ACI has not yet been approved by the FDA.
With time, the eye’s natural lens becomes too stiff to focus up close. As a result, words and other nearby objects are blurry. The clinical term for this loss of near vision is presbyopia. This condition happens to everyone and typically occurs between the ages of 40 and 50.
The ACI is a mini-ring with an opening in the center. It is much smaller than a contact lens and lighter than a grain of salt.
The opening in the center of the inlay restores near and intermediate vision by focusing light coming into the eye. In addition, the inlay’s advanced design features 8,400 high precision, laser etched micro-openings along the surface to help the cornea stay healthy.
In the US clinical trial, which was started in February 2009, we contributed 65 of the study’s nearly 504 patients. These patients will need to be followed for three years. We were fortunate to be selected as one of the main sites for this investigational, futuristic technology and anxiously await the time we will be able to offer this on a wider scale to all of our patients.

Dr. Phillip C. Hoopes, Chief Surgeon of Hoopes Vision, was recently named to Premier Surgeon’s PS250 list. Premier Surgeon is a new trade publication focusing on premium lens implants and lens implant surgery. Premier Surgeon’s PS250 list recognizes 250 ophthalmic surgeons that are leaders and innovators in the field of premium intraocular lens implants (IOLs) and refractive surgery.
In a process similar to traditional cataract surgery, premium IOL lens implant surgery replaces the natural crystalline lens in the eye. However, unlike traditional cataract surgery implants, these newer lenses allow the patient to see at variable distances improving both distant and near vision. These newer implants are often an ideal choice for the active Baby Boomer who is now having difficulty seeing up close (relying on bifocals or reading glasses) and/or is in the beginning stages of developing cataracts. New research into improvement of lens implant surgery is continuing to make it easier, more comfortable and more precise for the surgeon and patient.

We’d like to thank everyone who came out to the Hoopes Vision 10-year anniversary party at Jordan Commons on Saturday, May 8, 2010. Around 1200 people attended to help make it a huge success. We were glad to have so many supporters from the community including the Utah Jazz bear and Dancers, Utah Flash’s Flash Fox, Leo the Lion from Real Salt Lake, Miller sports park, local radio DJs, many of our comanaging optometrist, and of course our patients!
We hope everyone had a chance to see the timeline with significant achievements that have been attained in the past ten years. The timeline will be on display in our office for people to see. We were able to take a lot of pictures of the event, and as promised, here they are.
Once again, thanks to all of those who attended. We couldn’t be what we are without the help of our fantastic staff, the community, and the patients who have trusted our doctors with their eyes.

Olympic Bobsledder, Valerie Fleming, chose Hoopes Vision for her recent vision correction procedure. During Valerie’s initial evaluation, Dr. Hoopes determined that she was a good candidate for PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). Fleming’s Myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism were corrected in our surgery center, and she is happy to report that she is now seeing 20/20. When asked about her experience, Valerie stated “Everyone at Hoopes was extremely friendly and very helpful in explaining the process and transition of the surgery. I would definitely recommend Hoopes to future candidates”.
Valerie graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1998 with a degree in communications. While at UCSB she was a decorated track star in the javelin event. She continued her education at St. Mary’s College, earning a Master’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. She began bobsledding in 2003 and just three years later won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Torino, Italy with driver Shauna Rohbock. The team has gone on to win at least 22 international medals together, including three World Cup gold medals. When Valerie isn’t competing, she enjoys spending time with her nephews Nicholas and Brandon. Congratulations on your new perfect vision Valerie!

Dr. Phillip C. Hoopes, Jr., Merlin Olsen, and Dr. Phillip C. Hoopes at Hoopes Vision
Football legend, TV star, and well known Utah born philanthropist Merlin Olsen died on Thursday after a year long battle with mesothelioma. Merlin’s first claim to fame came as one of the NFL’s greatest defensive linemen playing for the Los Angles Rams. He was drafted to the Rams after his successful college football years as a Utah State University Aggie. During his professional football career, he was named to 14 Pro Bowls (an NFL record), and was known as one of the famed “Fearsome Foursome”.
Not long after his legendary football days he found further fame in the world of TV. In 1977, Merlin became a trusted face in millions of homes portraying Michael Landon’s friend Jonathan Garvey on “Little House on the Prairie” and later as the title character in his own series “Father Murphy”.
Mr. Olsen was seen in our office and although his 6’5” stature seemed intimidating, when meeting him face to face, he demonstrated such warmth and genuine kindness to our staff and had a way of putting everyone at ease. Our doctors and a few staff members were fortunate to have lunch with Merlin where we were treated to fun stories from his years in the NFL, his extensive travels abroad, and lessons learned while working with his friend Michael Landon.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time. The NFL has lost a legend, TV has lost an icon, and many have lost a wonderful friend.
